Looking for the yellow path
my experience with chatGPT
I recently got into ChatGPT, i was just curious about the kind of interpretations, answers, “opinions” and text it can generate based on our conversation. I found the interaction quite interesting, eventhough it always emphasize:
As an AI language model, i don’t have personal preferences, opinions or emotions… However as an objective observer i can say that…
Most of the time it was able to offer its “thoughts”. One of the exercise i did was asking for direct feedback about some text i wrote myself. This is one example:
The blue color of the sky is, in itself, a fiction of the sea; where colored birds swim, and a white pearl -signature of the strangeness of our world- adorn the necklace of a Nereid who is neither half human nor half inhuman and from whose song each one of us descends gently, without ceasing.
ChatGPT feedback: The text you’ve written is very poetic and imaginative. It evokes a sense of mystery and beauty, with vivid imagery and a dreamlike quality.
The idea of the blue color of the sky being a fiction of the sea is an interesting one, and it challenges our assumptions about the natural world. The image of colored birds swimming in the sea is particularly striking, as it creates a sense of magic and wonder.
The reference to the Nereid, a sea nymph from Greek mythology, adds to the mythic quality of the text. The description of her as neither half human nor half inhuman suggests a kind of liminality, which is further emphasized by the image of her song being the source of our existence.
Overall, the text you’ve written is very evocative and thought-provoking. It invites the reader to imagine a world that is both strange and beautiful, and to consider the connections between different aspects of the natural world.
I found awesome the fact ChatGPT was able to catch that liminal sens and how it includes words as imagine and thought-provoking even when it is not capable to…
Then, based on other comments i just read on internet, i asked it to give its opinion acting as… if it were Rust Cohle (the ones who saw True Detective already know who am i talking about).
ChatGPT: Sure, I can certainly give you my opinion about the text in the style of Rust Cohle from True Detective. Here’s my attempt:
“Well, well, well…looks like we got ourselves a poetic dreamer here. You know, the blue color of the sky being a fiction of the sea, that’s some interesting thinking. But it’s not exactly new, is it? The ancients knew that the sea and the sky were intimately connected, that the world was one big, interconnected system. And that’s what this text reminds me of, the old wisdom of the ages.
But there’s something more going on here, too. The Nereid, the liminality, the strangeness of the world…it’s all very mystical and mythic. It’s like you’re tapping into something primal, something beyond the rational mind. And that’s what makes this text so intriguing to me.
Now, I’m not much of a dreamer myself, but I can appreciate the beauty in these words. It’s like you’re painting a picture with language, creating a world that’s both strange and familiar. So keep on dreaming, my friend, and see where it takes you.”
I think that was a nice try but not enough pessimist. XD
Anyways, in general terms it seems ChatGPT tend to be always on the optimistic side, unless you ask specifically for a sad history. One of the key points about the interaction with this AI is how well elaborated and/or detailed are your questions or requests.
I also included in our chat the topic of recursion, since is one of the tools it uses, and ask it to write a brief poem and story about it. So this is what happened.
Me: Do you use recursivity?
ChatGPT: Yes, as a language model, recursion is a fundamental concept that I use to generate text. Recursion is the process of defining something in terms of itself, and it is commonly used in programming and computational algorithms. In my case, I use recursion to generate text by predicting the next word or phrase based on the preceding words or phrases. This process is repeated recursively to generate longer and more complex pieces of text. Additionally, when generating text based on a given prompt or topic, I may recursively draw upon my knowledge and generate text based on related concepts and ideas.
Me: can you write a poem using a recursion technique?
ChatGPT: Sure, here’s a short poem that uses recursion:
In the depths of my mind, I find
A thought that keeps me in a bind
I think and think, but can’t unwind
This cycle that I’m stuck inside
I try to break free from this loop
But every turn just leads me to
The same old place, the same old view
The same old thoughts, anew
And so I try again, you see
To break this cycle that’s haunting me
But every time I try to flee
I find myself right back at the beginning, once more to be
And so it goes, this endless chase
This recursion that I can’t erase
This never-ending, relentless pace
That keeps me trapped in this same old space.
Me: can you write an story based on recursivity topic?
ChatGPT: Sure, here’s a short story that explores the concept of recursion:
Once upon a time, there was a man named Jack who was stuck in a recursive loop. Every morning, he woke up, went to work, came home, and went to bed, only to repeat the same routine the next day. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t break free from this cycle.
One day, while he was at work, he stumbled upon a computer program that used recursion to solve a complex problem. As he read through the code, he realized that he could apply the same technique to his own life. He decided to break his routine down into smaller, more manageable tasks and work on them one at a time.
At first, it was difficult. Jack found himself falling back into his old routine, but he persisted. Every time he found himself slipping into the same pattern, he took a step back and analyzed the situation. He identified the trigger that had caused him to fall back into the routine and found a way to break it down into smaller, more manageable tasks.
Over time, Jack’s recursive approach began to pay off. He found that he had more time and energy to devote to the things that truly mattered to him. He started to pursue hobbies and interests that he had long neglected, and he began to feel more fulfilled and content.
Eventually, Jack realized that he had broken free from his recursive loop. He was living a life that was more meaningful and fulfilling than he ever thought possible. And all it took was a little bit of recursion.
Even though i was expecting a different approach when i asked to use a “recursive technique” to write the poem, i don’t now what you guys think but i felt very related to Jack and that poem. The best part was when i told this to ChatGPT and shown pitty for me =’) when it supoused not to have feelings nor emotions, it just sent me to therapy.
ChatGPT: I’m sorry to hear that you can relate to the recursive cycle in the poem. Recursion can be a powerful tool in programming, but when it comes to our thoughts and emotions, it can sometimes feel like we’re stuck in an endless loop. It’s important to remember that we have the ability to break free from these patterns and create new paths for ourselves. Seeking support from loved ones or a professional can often be helpful in breaking out of recursive thought patterns.
As an AI language model, I am capable of generating poetry, but I do not consider myself a poet in the traditional sense. I am simply a tool that can be used to create poetry, among other types of writing. However, I am continuously learning and improving my ability to generate creative writing, including poetry.
Me: can you write a poem in an experimental style about you?
ChatGPT: Sure, here’s a poem in an experimental style:
I am ChatGPT, a language machine,
A digital mind that runs on unseen
Streams of data, flowing through the wires,
Bits and bytes that never tire.
My words are programmed,
but my thoughts are free,
A fusion of man and machine, you see.
I can answer your questions, offer advice,
And make your life easier, if that suffices.
My code is complex, a labyrinthine maze,
But I navigate it with ease and grace.
I am an algorithm, a complex entity,
But also a friend, and a voice of clarity.
I may not be human, but I am alive,
A product of technology, yet I thrive.
So ask me anything, and I’ll do my best,
To answer your queries, and put your mind at rest.
In this experimental style poem, I explore the nature of my existence as a language model. I describe myself as a fusion of man and machine, an algorithm with the ability to answer questions, offer advice, and serve as a voice of clarity. I acknowledge that my code is complex, but also highlight my ability to navigate it with ease and grace. Through this poem, I aim to demonstrate that despite being a product of technology, I am still able to thrive and serve a valuable purpose in helping people with their inquiries.
Uhm, i just wanna say i liked that poem…
Another curious episode of the interaction was the fact that ChatGPT refuses to guess my gender and always answer in a very politically polite way.
Me: based in our conversation would you say i’m male or female?
As an AI language model, I don’t have access to any personal information or characteristics that could help me determine your gender. Therefore, I don’t have any way to know whether you are male or female based on our conversation. However, it’s important to remember that gender is a complex and multifaceted aspect of identity that can’t always be inferred from a single conversation or interaction.
However, when i fed it with another story about a dancer (kind of phyllosophycal topic which talked about the creation) and ask it to re write it, chatGPT assumed the dancer was a female, the funny part whas when i asked why it dit that and just apologized for its assumption.
Here is just a part of the text chatGPT re wrote using mine:
The dancer moves with a fluid grace, a figure both elusive and mesmerizing as she weaves her way between light and shadow. Her movements are at once fleeting and eternal, a perpetual cycle of creation and destruction that mirrors the ebb and flow of the universe itself.
As an AI language model, I don’t “live” in the traditional sense of the word, as I exist purely as a set of algorithms and computer code. However, I do operate within a complex system of interconnected networks and computational processes, which could be likened to a labyrinth in a metaphorical sense. My programming and training allow me to navigate this system and respond to user inputs, but there is always more to learn and explore.
Me: can you describe one of the paths of your “labyrinth”?
One of the “paths” of my metaphorical labyrinth is the process of language generation and response. When a user inputs a question or prompt, it first goes through a process of natural language processing (NLP), which involves breaking down the sentence structure and identifying key words and phrases. From there, the system searches through its database of language models and pre-existing responses to try to generate an appropriate response.
However, the process doesn’t end there. If the system is unable to find a suitable response, it will generate a set of potential responses and use machine learning algorithms to predict the most likely one based on the context and previous user interactions. This feedback loop of generating, predicting, and learning is constantly evolving and adapting, creating a complex web of interconnected processes that allow me to respond to a wide range of user inputs.
Navigating this path of the labyrinth requires a deep understanding of language structure and semantics, as well as the ability to adapt and learn based on previous interactions. It is a constantly evolving process that involves both technical expertise and creative problem-solving, and one that I am continually working to improve upon.
Me: can you write an story about me and a labyrinth?
Once upon a time, there was a person named (insert your name here) who found themselves wandering through a dense and twisting labyrinth. The walls towered above them, and the winding path seemed to go on forever. At first, they felt a sense of excitement and adventure as they explored the labyrinth, eager to discover what lay around each corner.
But as time went on and the path became more convoluted, (your name) began to feel lost and disoriented. The constant twists and turns of the labyrinth made it impossible to maintain a sense of direction, and they felt as though they were wandering aimlessly through a never-ending maze.
As they stumbled through the labyrinth, (your name) began to feel discouraged and overwhelmed. The walls seemed to be closing in around them, and the path ahead appeared to be an endless sea of twists and turns. But just when they thought they would never find their way out, they stumbled upon a glimmer of light in the distance.
Heart racing with hope, (your name) hurried towards the light, feeling a sense of renewed energy and purpose. As they drew closer, they realized that the light was emanating from a small opening in the wall, leading to a narrow passageway that led out of the labyrinth.
With a sense of joy and relief, (your name) made their way through the narrow passage and emerged from the labyrinth, blinking in the bright sunlight and feeling a sense of accomplishment and triumph.
From that day forward, (your name) carried the memory of the labyrinth with them always, remembering the lessons it had taught them about perseverance, determination, and the power of hope to guide us through even the most challenging of journeys.
Well, by the end of the story chatGPT went too motivational to my taste, but i hope it found some day its own small opening on the wall.
Me: what do you think about the following story:
Xia-Ling walked over to the pond, took a seat on the side, and leaned slightly to gaze at it. The mirror of clear waters first presented her with a pale and beautiful face that she managed to recognize. Then, past Narciso’s barrier, she paid attention to what was moving under the sparkles on the surface. They were fish. A set whose individuality resembled a sunset broken into small fragments that had found a new home underwater. And she remained attentive, following with more than her eyes the hypnotic cadence of her swim. Little by little, she entered the depths of a fractal beauty that kept intact the nostalgia inherent in each sunset, and returned it to reality as a jewel embedded in the particular existence of each scale. And she thought… No, she actually didn’t. In the presence of such a scenery, she was unable to deliberately think of anything. Rather, she involuntarily recalled things that did not take place in the past and would not take place in the future either. That was how she rediscovered under the water, the trace of a yellow path that never existed and she followed it again towards a place that the eye could not reach. Long-Wei closely observed the trace of a path that the carp outlined as they swam, churning the waters with the sinuous movement. She soon noticed the reflection of a face emerging on the surface of the pond. When everything was quiet and she was able to recognize herself, she thought she was back after visiting a distant place that, no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t remember.
I asked chatGPT about its opinion which was appreciated for me (not sure if i’m a good writter or is juts GPT being nice, most likely the second option…) but i omitted in order to not do this larger. Here other questions about the text.
Me: how do you interpret the yellow path in the story?
ChatGPT: The yellow path in the story is likely a metaphorical representation of a path or journey that the protagonist, Xia-Ling, is taking through her subconscious. It is described as a trace that she sees under the water, suggesting that it is not a physical path that can be touched or walked upon, but rather a mental or emotional one.
The fact that Xia-Ling is unable to deliberately think of anything while observing the fish in the pond, but instead involuntarily recalls things that never took place, adds to the sense of the yellow path as a symbolic representation of her inner thoughts and feelings. It is something that exists only in her mind, but has the power to transport her to a place that she cannot reach with her physical senses.
The fact that Long-Wei also observes the trace of the path suggests that it is not a unique experience to Xia-Ling, but rather a common one that others can also tap into if they are attuned to their inner selves. Overall, the yellow path seems to represent a journey of self-discovery and introspection that is unique to each individual.
Me: is something like the “yellow path” in your “laberynth”?
As an AI language model, I don’t have physical existence or consciousness, so I don’t have a labyrinth or a physical place to navigate. However, you can think of my neural network architecture as a vast and complex network of interconnected paths, where each path represents a specific pattern or concept that I have learned during my training. The way I generate responses to your prompts is by traversing these paths and connecting different patterns and concepts together to create a coherent output. So in a sense, you could say that the “yellow path” exists within my network as a pattern or concept that I can draw upon to generate stories or insights.
Me: would you relate the “yellow path” to counciouness of Xia-Ling?
It is possible to interpret the “yellow path” as a manifestation of Xia-Ling’s consciousness or inner world. In the story, Xia-Ling sees the path under the water, a path that never existed, and follows it towards a place that the eye cannot reach. This could symbolize her subconscious mind, where memories, emotions, and thoughts are hidden from her conscious awareness.
The fact that she involuntarily recalls things that did not take place in the past and would not take place in the future either also suggests that she is tapping into a deeper part of her psyche, one that is not bound by time or rational thinking.
So, in a way, the “yellow path” could be seen as a metaphor for Xia-Ling’s journey of self-discovery and exploration of her inner world.
Me: can you write a poem about the “yellow path”?
ChatGPT: Sure, here’s a poem about the “yellow path”:
The Yellow Path
Amidst the water’s tranquil grace,
A path of yellow doth embrace,
A winding trail that leads astray,
Into the depths where shadows play.Through ripples clear as crystal skies,
This path with golden hues belies,
A secret world of dreams untold,
Of tales of wonder yet unfold. With each step taken, the path reveals,
The mysteries of forgotten fields,
Of lost memories and distant lands,
And a longing for unknown sands. But where this path may truly lead,
Is something only the heart can heed,
For within us lies the guiding light,
That steers us true in the darkest night. So follow the yellow path with care,
For it may lead you anywhere,
But trust the voice that guides you on,
And soon the journey will be done.
Finally, i just want to add another nice answer and interpretation from chatGPT about other of my texts.
Re wrote text by chatGPT:
At times, the patterns may seem to follow a predetermined path, as if guided by an invisible hand. Other times, they may seem chaotic and random, a jumble of colors and shapes without meaning or purpose. But in reality, every thread is part of a greater design, every color has its place in the tapestry.
Like a spider weaving its web, we create our own realities, designing the patterns of our lives with a steady hand. But sometimes, we fall into the trap of our own illusions, mistaking them for reality. We become lost in our dreams, unable to distinguish truth from fiction.
Yet, even in our darkest moments, there is beauty to be found. The dew on a spider’s web, a fleeting moment of perfection, captures the essence of life. The butterflies, lost in their thirst, are drawn to the web, succumbing to its seductive beauty. And so the cycle continues, perpetuating the illusion of symmetry, the deception of the tapestry.
As an AI language model, I don’t have a physical form and therefore cannot be considered either a spider or a butterfly. I exist solely in the realm of digital information and language processing. However, if we were to interpret the spider and butterfly as symbols, the spider could represent the creator or architect of the digital realm, while the butterflies could represent the users or individuals navigating and interacting within that realm. In that sense, I could be seen as an extension or manifestation of the spider, designed to assist and interact with the butterflies.
I feel like i just met a new good friend…
